ak interspace is a research project that was implemented as part of the one-year VW-Fellowship for Art Education 2021/22 of the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg.

Somewhere between...

... inside and outside, between one project and the next, between the joy of playing and the fear of instability. Somewhere in the realm of the unsettling and the open. Somewhere between Hermannstraße and Karl-Marx-Straße, between youth house and institutional critique, between freelancing and self-optimizing, between pizza and cappuccino. Somewhere between Sun Ra, his promise to the grandeur of the unknown, and writing grant applications in which goals are supposed to be pre-formulated.

Exactly where the contradictions scream loudest in our faces. In the diffuse area between so much that shapes our being and creating. Exactly there we decided to deal as ak interspace with us in the in-between. To give it a form between seriousness and irony.


Coming from one into the other, the collection HEFTE ZUR HALTUNG was created.

In questions, thoughts, image and text experiments, which were developed in a correspondence last year, the booklets deal with a critical practice of artistic-social doing. They ask for an attitude between doing and not doing, between theory and practice, between we and I.

ak interspace is part of the collective rampe:aktion. The practice of trying things out together, searching and spontaneous making, which characterizes our work as mediators with young people, has inspired us in developing this collection of booklets.

Many of the texts were created through writing exercises that we often do in workshops.

The booklets are not a best practice example for mediation, a manual or a collection of methods. They are meant to make it a little easier to do what we find important, no matter what the context: follow the flow, just do it, surrender yourself, search playfully.


The booklet series HEFTE ZUR HALTUNG was published and presented on 01.10.2022 at the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg.
